Classroom Learning

I think that as time goes on, classroom learning is becoming more and more informal. Teachers are constantly challenged to make lessons more exciting and more interactive. This is so students will stay engaged and learn, instead of tuning us out. This is both exciting and daunting at the same time.

It's exciting because it gives us teachers the ability to reinvent what we have been doing and it allows us to see what works and doesn't within the realm of our classroom. Old lessons can be refreshed and reworked to fit the needs of current students. Every teacher has, at some point I'm sure, found a lesson done in a previous year and reworked it for the current class that they have. It's something that I think can be so rewarding to do, especially if it works to the benefit of your class.

However, informal learning can be daunting because there is this constant pressure to be fun and exciting for every lesson. Making lessons, or remaking them, can be exhausting for some because time is a precious thing in a classroom. The schedule exists for a reason and we all know that deviating from a schedule can be detrimental to a school day. Making sure that lessons are fun but not ridiculous is a challenge that we've all faced.

Informal learning in the classroom is here and is going to be around for a while. I think that the challenge of making sure that you find a balance is what is going to be the biggest aspect of it.

  1. You are so right! Balance is key. It is also hard because the kids often feel like you should have a new flashy lesson everyday. They don't understand how much planning goes into one lesson like that. Sometimes we have to sit and get and sometimes it's a loud messy learning party.

  2. I think in some ways a good old revamp is great! I'm currently working on changing over all of our professional development PowerPoints to Nearpod. That way it's more engaging for the students.

  3. Yes! Making sure you are engaging and thorough at the same time......also, not all lessons are super exciting kids. lol It is what it is. My kids love grammar practice, and editing tasks!?!?!?! I'm like, y'all are weird. LOL The most boring ever. I think it's because we go over the answers together and they get that instant feedback - that, and it isn't for a grade.
